Bespoke by Tessellate is a Singapore jewellery studio located at #B1-02 in Wheelock Place. Tessellate was founded in Singapore in 2014 by May, whose fascination with gemstones developed during a solo journey to India. Over time, she assembled a large collection of individually selected stones and developed the business from a jewellery label into a specialist bespoke service. The company works with natural gemstones, diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds, moissanite, 18-karat gold and platinum. The strongest distinction is its emphasis on coloured gemstones. Many conventional engagement-ring shops begin with the assumption that the central stone should be a white diamond. Tessellate offers a broader vocabulary, including sapphires in lavender, teal and other tones, as well as alternative stones selected for colour, personality or meaning. The founder’s large gemstone collection allows the design process to begin with the stone itself. Because natural gemstones differ in hue, clarity, shape and internal character, the final ring can be designed around the particular stone rather than forcing every stone into a standard catalogue setting. The result is potentially more individual, though customers should always ask clearly about treatment, origin, certification and durability before purchasing a valuable coloured gem. Clients can discuss the gemstone, metal, setting, proportions and symbolic details with the design team. Its coloured sapphires and other distinctive gemstones offer an alternative to the conventional white-diamond engagement ring. The Wheelock Place showroom has a calm and elegant interior. Pale curved walls, timber-and-glass cabinets, warm metallic frames and carefully spaced displays make it feel more like a private design salon than a normal jewellery shop. The understated interior allows attention to remain on the stones and the craftsmanship. When I passed the store, it appeared to be closed, so I was unable to examine the jewellery closely. The company’s published hours currently state that it opens daily from 11.30 am to 8.30 pm, but its bespoke consultations are conducted by appointment. This may explain why the showroom was secured when I visited. It would be sensible to make an appointment before coming specifically for a consultation. The name Tessellate is particularly appropriate. Tessellation describes separate forms joining together to create a complete pattern. Here, gemstone, metal, craftsmanship and personal memory are brought together to create a single piece of jewellery. It is a thoughtful local alternative to the large international jewellery houses surrounding Orchard Road.
